For the film going public of Kerala, the mere mention of the names Dasan and Vijayan is bound to send them into peals of laughter. The hilarious duo of Dasan and Vijayan (played by Mohanlal and Sreenivasan respectively), seen first in the late 1980’s in the Satyan Anthicaud-directed Nadodikaattu (1987), had secured a safe and enviable place in the hearts of Malayalees. And when a sequel Pattanapravesham came up next year, people were only too glad to lap it up. And then in 1990 came the third part of the film – Akkare Akkare Akkare, this time with a different director, namely Priyadarshan. Of course all the three films were scripted by Sreenivasan.
And now, the funny detectives Dasan (Ramdas) and Vijayan working for the Kerala Police are set to make a comeback, most likely in early 2009, in Dasanum Vijayanum, this time to be directed by Rosshan Andrrews (who had directed Udayanaanu Thaaram and Notebook). The fourth part of the series, which is likely to start rolling by the end of 2008, will have a different scenarist – James Albert (of Classmates fame), and will be produced by Seven Arts. Considering the popularity that Dasan and Vijayan still enjoys even among the new generation of film viewers, Dasanum Vijayanum certainly is going to be a film worth waiting for.
